Ghana’s first ever Dive Lab, building the skills to conduct underwater research and restoration projects

Why we need a Dive Lab

Very few Ghanaian marine scientists and conservationists have access to the diving skills needed to conduct underwater research and restoration projects. To bridge this skills gap, we started the Dive Lab, equipping Ghanaians with the practical skills to participate in hands-on protection of our local marine ecosystems

We launched Ghana’s first ever Dive Lab, led by George Amado, a certified PADI Dive Instructor and Coral Restoration Instructor, in collaboration with NEWF (Nature Environment and Wildlife Filmmakers).

The first session was a 6-day residential programme held on 15-21 September 2025, with 10 participants including marine science students and faculty from the University of Ghana. We hosted the programme at the Regional Maritime University in Accra, using their school pool for Part 1 of the certification training (e-learning, pool sessions, and a practice open water dive).

Stay tuned for details of our next steps enhancing Ghana’s ocean access!

“Such an unforgettable moment, an entirely new window opening into underwater research, science and storytelling from archaeology to history to conservation and restoration.”
