Reef Guardians:

Ocean education and awareness for coastal youth

Why we need it

Ghana’s coral reefs and coastal ecosystems are under increasing threat from pollution, overfishing, and climate change. Yet, awareness of marine conservation remains low, particularly among youth in coastal communities whose livelihoods depend on the ocean and schools often lack access to relevant environmental education materials or local marine examples.

By empowering teachers and students with knowledge and practical experiences, the project will foster a new generation of ocean ambassadors committed to protecting Ghana’s marine ecosystems.

The Reef Guardians project aims to build ocean literacy and inspire environmental stewardship among young people in Ghana’s coastal communities through engaging education, storytelling, and hands-on learning.

What we’re doing

We ran pilot projects in schools and community centres in Accra in 2024 and 2025. We now want to expand this project beyond Accra to additional coastal areas in Ghana.

Our next step is implementing a six-month initiative to develop and distribute interactive teaching materials on coral reefs and marine conservation, conduct school-based workshops, and organize community outreach events
